The AI Arms Race Has Started.
I wasn't surprised when I heard about Anthropic's Mythos.
That probably sounds strange considering the general reaction from the security world wasn't simply concern, it was panic. Emergency meetings with Wall Street CEOs. Government briefings. And 99% of the vulnerabilities Mythos found are still unpatched. The headlines framed it as a breakthrough with dangerous implications.
Mythos isn’t an anomaly. It is the next logical step in a direction AI has been heading for a long time, and if you are not paying close attention, it is the clearest signal yet that the AI you’ve been reading about is becoming the AI that runs your business.
Artificial intelligence was always going to get here. From early pattern recognition to large language models to autonomous agents, the trajectory has been moving toward one outcome: systems that can not only understand information, but act on it.
What Mythos represents, in plain terms, is this: an AI system that can identify vulnerabilities in complex systems at a scale and speed no human team could match. It can map relationships between those vulnerabilities and generate paths to exploit them automatically and instantly.
The implication most people are missing is the inverse. For every vulnerability a system like Mythos can identify, it can also generate a solution. The capability is not inherently good or bad. It is the most powerful tool in the history of cybersecurity, pointed in both directions at once.
The question is not whether this capability exists. It does. The question is who controls it, and what happens when the answer to that question is unclear.
The Nuclear Analogy Nobody Wants to Make
I have believed for years that the person or organization with the most accurate and reliable AI will become the most powerful entity in the world. That is not a metaphor. It is a reality that deserves to be stated plainly.
We are in an AI arms race. It does not look like a traditional military buildup, but the underlying dynamic is the same as the development of the nuclear bomb. Organizations are racing to understand and act on information faster than anyone else. The gap between those who can and those who cannot is not a competitive advantage. It is a structural power shift.
You can already see it. Every new model release is measured and immediately compared to what came before. There are even markets where people place bets on which system will outperform the rest. This is not just innovation. It is a competition to define the frontier.
Fear is not a reason to slow down. The systems capable of exposing every vulnerability in your infrastructure are the same systems that can eliminate them. The question is not whether the technology is dangerous. It is whether the people using it understand the consequences of what they have built.
That is where the real risk sits. Not in the technology, but in the decisions surrounding it. Anthropic has reportedly used philosophers to guide their models toward empathy and ethical reasoning. That matters. But it raises a more difficult question: what happens when those constraints are removed?
We are operating in grey territory, and the people navigating it are not always the ones best equipped to do so.
What Mythos Actually Exposed
Anthropic’s response to Mythos, limiting access, coordinating with government entities, and restricting deployment, has been framed as a safety precaution. It is something more revealing than that. It is an acknowledgment that a system now exists that can generate more attack paths than current day defensive systems can realistically process in real time.
That is not a Mythos problem. That is a structural problem that Mythos simply made impossible to ignore.
Here is the gap that should concern you:
When a vulnerability is identified, by Mythos, by a threat actor, or by your own team, three things need to happen.
First, it is discovered and contained.
Second, a solution is developed and deployed.
Third, the system needs to be able to prove what happened.
Most organizations cannot do these three things consistently. Not because their teams are incapable, but because the systems they rely on were never designed to support it.
The issue is not that AI has made systems too powerful. The issue is that nothing was built to control what happens after action is taken. There is no visibility into how decisions are made. There is no framework for when those decisions fail.
The enterprise stack is now a closed-loop system operating at machine speed. It is optimized to act. It is not optimized to explain.
If you cannot explain how something was fixed, you cannot guarantee it will not fail the same way again. That is how history repeats itself.

I want to be direct about something.
We built this company because we believe the most dangerous thing in enterprise security right now is not a sophisticated threat actor. It is a complexity that nobody can explain. It is a room full of brilliant people — identity teams, infrastructure teams, security teams, compliance teams — each doing the right thing within their own scope, but none of them are able to say, with confidence, that the system is actually doing what it is supposed to be doing.
And if you cannot say that, you do not have trust. You have assumptions.
I also built it because I am tired of a field that uses technical language as a gate instead of a door. You do not need to understand the OSI model to recognize that your organization cannot answer three basic questions: who has access to what, why they have it, and what happens if that access is wrong. Those are not technical questions. They are business questions. And right now, most organizations cannot answer them.
What we need is a Trust Layer. A governance layer that sits above existing security tools and business applications and continuously aligns their behavior with real-world requirements: compliance obligations, internal policies, and industry standards.
Every enforcement action becomes a measurable event. Every decision is recorded. Every action is reversible. Not because it is best practice, but because you cannot manage what you cannot see, and you cannot fix what you cannot explain.

The future belongs to systems that can remain stable as capabilities expand. Mythos proved that the rate of expansion just accelerated. The organizations that will navigate this moment are not the ones with the most tools. They are the ones that can look at every decision their security infrastructure makes and say: I know what happened, I know why, and I can prove it.
What You Should Do Today
If you’ve made it this far, I want to leave you with three questions to bring into your next security conversation:
When something goes wrong in our security infrastructure, how quickly can we explain exactly what happened and why?
If the answer is days or weeks, you have a visibility problem.
Can our security systems prove that every enforcement action was taken correctly, under the right conditions, with a documented rationale?
If not, you are operating on assumption.
Are our security tools aligned, or are they each making independent decisions based on their own local logic?
If it is the latter, you do not have a security posture. You have a collection of tools.
These are not comfortable questions. They were not comfortable for me when I first started asking them. But the organizations asking them now will be the ones still standing when the AI arms race reaches its next inflection point.
And it will.
Systems that cannot explain themselves cannot be trusted.
